Hand Weakness

Experiencing numbness in the hands can be quite irritating, especially for those of us whose jobs depend on our hands: occupations as diverse as clerical work and computer programming are at equally high risk. In these situations that already encourage overuse of the hands, numbness and tingling are not things that should just be ignored: these are early warning signals that CTS – carpal tunnel syndrome – may be around the corner.

Sensations of numbness in the left or right hand may at first result from the median nerves at the wrist being temporarily blocked by excessive pressure. A day or two of rest or of varied activity using the hands may correct the problem. However, if the sensation of numb hands or overall hand weakness persists, then it is vital to see a doctor in order to get a better diagnosis.

Carpal tunnel, during its early stages, can be relieved using some simple exercises. Stretching and rolling of the palms is an effective hand weakness treatment to restore the flow in the median nerves to normal levels. If you believe the source of your hand numbness may be extended hours in front of the computer, lowering the keyboard and mouse helps to lessen the extra pressure put on the shoulders and hands, providing relief.

While these exercises and changes in routine should lessen any sensation of numbness or tingling in the hands, it is advisable to consult with your physician to determine your risk factors for the condition escalating into full-blown CTS. Advanced cases of carpal tunnel syndrome result in symptoms that can be acutely painful and interfere greatly with the most routine tasks. Should your doctor find that swelling has already developed in the median area, he or she may recommend a surgical solution for effective, long-lasting results.
